AI Detection
Penmate includes built-in AI content detection to help teachers identify submissions that may have been written or heavily assisted by AI tools like ChatGPT. This feature helps maintain academic integrity in your classroom.
How It Works
When AI detection is enabled for a task, every submission is automatically analysed using multiple detection methods. Penmate combines several signals to determine whether a submission may contain AI-generated content.
If the analysis indicates a concern, the submission is automatically flagged for teacher review.
Enabling AI Detection
AI detection is enabled per task:
- When creating or editing a task, toggle the AI Detection option
- All submissions for that task will be automatically analysed
- Flagged submissions are marked in the teacher’s dashboard
AI detection is available for school accounts.
What Teachers See
For each submission with AI detection enabled, teachers can see:
- Whether the submission was flagged as potentially AI-generated
- Sentence-level highlighting — individual sentences are colour-coded to indicate areas of concern
- Writing behaviour insights — information about how the student wrote their text
- A brief summary explaining the detection findings
Important Notes
- AI detection is a supporting tool, not a definitive verdict — always use professional judgement
- Results are visible only to teachers — students do not see whether their work has been flagged
- No detection method is 100% accurate — use the results as one input alongside your own assessment
