Task Types
Penmate supports a range of writing task types aligned with Cambridge English exam formats. The available types depend on the CEFR level you select.

| Essay | Discursive or argumentative writing on a given topic. Requires a clear position and supporting arguments. |
| Article | Engaging writing for a publication, with a clear audience in mind. Should capture the reader’s interest. |
| General email communication. Can be formal or informal depending on context. | |
| Formal Email | Professional or official email with appropriate formal register. |
| Informal Email | Friendly, casual email to someone you know well. |
| Story | Narrative writing with character development, setting, and plot. |
| Report | Structured writing that presents information, findings, and recommendations. |
| Review | Critical evaluation of a book, film, restaurant, event, or similar. Should include opinions and recommendations. |
| Formal Letter | Official letter with appropriate formal conventions (salutation, sign-off, register). |
| Informal Letter | Friendly letter to someone you know, using casual register. |
| Proposal | Formal document proposing a plan or course of action, with supporting reasons. |
Task Types by CEFR Level
Not all task types are available at every level. In Cambridge mode, Penmate shows only the types that are appropriate for the selected level:
B1 (Preliminary)

B2 (First)
- Essay, Article, Informal Email, Formal Email, Report, Review
C1 (Advanced)
- Essay, Article, Formal Letter, Informal Letter, Report, Review, Proposal
C2 (Proficiency)
- Essay, Article, Formal Letter, Informal Letter, Report, Review
In Freestyle mode, all task types are available at any level.
