Getting StartedYour First Assignment

Your First Assignment

This guide walks you through creating and assigning your first writing task in Penmate — from start to finish.

Step 1: Create a Class

If you haven’t already, create a class for your students:

  1. Go to Classes in the main menu
  2. Click New Class
  3. Enter a name for your class (e.g. “FCE Group A”)

Step 2: Add Students

Add students to your class:

  • Import from spreadsheet — upload a CSV or Excel file with student names and email addresses
  • Add manually — enter each student’s first name, last name, and email address one by one
  • Import from Google Classroom — if your school uses Google Classroom, you can sync your class list directly

Step 3: Create a Task

  1. Go to Tasks in the main menu
  2. Click New Task
  3. Choose a mode:
    • Cambridge — generates a task aligned with Cambridge English exam formats. Select a CEFR level (B1–C2) and a task type (essay, article, letter, etc.). Penmate generates the assignment with appropriate word range and instructions.
    • Freestyle — write your own task instructions manually, with full control over the content.
  4. Review the generated task and make any adjustments

Step 4: Assign to Students

  1. Open the task you want to assign
  2. Click Assign
  3. Select the classes or individual students who should receive it
  4. Set a deadline — when students need to submit by
  5. Confirm the assignment

Students receive an email with a link to write and submit their work directly through Penmate.

Step 5: Review Results

Once students submit their work:

  • Each submission is automatically evaluated by Penmate’s AI
  • You’ll see scores for Content, Communicative Achievement, Organisation, and Language
  • You’ll see strengths and areas for improvement for each criterion
  • You can track results across all students in the class overview
